This is the second edition with Rowlandson's illustrations, preceded by Tegg's edition of 1809. Without the half-title. There is some off-setting from the plates and occasional spotting, light soiling and minor staining. It is still a good copy and has the virtue of being entirely uncut. This fantastic travel account was first published in 1786 as a 42-page chapbook titled Baron Munchausen's Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia. The work was not definitively attributed to Rudolph Eric Raspe until 1824. "Though the greatest of all travel liars, Raspe's Munchausen was based on a real German original, Karl Friedrich Hieronymus, Freiherr von Münchausen (1720-1797), who during his youth had fought in Russia against the Turks" (ODNB). Octavo. Frontispiece with tissue guard, 30 plates, illustrated throughout text. Title page printed in red and black. Original white cloth lettered and decorated in black, wavy black stripes to edges. Armorial bookplate of pioneering ship-owner and MP for Barrow-in-Furness Sir Charles William Cayzer, 1st Baronet of Gartmore (1843-1916). His shipping company, Cayzer, Irvine & Co., was a significant force in the trade between Britain and India. Later ownership inscription to front free endpaper. Spine toned, spine ends bumped, light rubbing to cloth, foxing to outer leaves. A very good copy.…
