Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. 1st Edition. VERY RARE INDEED to find a SIGNED copy of the first US edition; AND VERY RARE to find this book with a jacket of whatever quality. The marvellous design on the jacket is by Wolcott, and it shows a stylish 30s couple stepping out on the town, top hat, white tie and possibly tails, and all of it very Art Deco. But the jacket has a section of the spine missing at the base, where the publisher's name and logo should be, numerous chips and ratty turn arounds at the flap folds. But it does at least have both flaps, and is very largely complete front and back despite my reservations. It is not price clipped and is now safely sleeved in mylar. On the inside front flap the author has written the following in nice blue fountain pen ink, "For Bill and George Lawrence, New Year, 1933 from Rupert Croft-Cooke" which is then underligned. A beautiful and rare full signature and a relevant date. The binding is secure and the text block is firm. The endpapers are not cracked, the dark blue binding is still nice and rich, and the lime yellow titling is still bright on the spine. The embossed cartouche on the book's textured cloth cover is nice and crisp and sharp, although the corners are all a touch soft. All in all, despite the faults, this signed first printing is a true rarity, and the reasonable price being asked means it will appeal to all collectors of this writer.
