'The sense of social responsibility, political commitment, and moral vision that informs Russian literature is in large part the product of a critical tradition established in the middle third of the nineteenth century. Belinsky, Chernyshevsky, and Dobrolyubov created an empirical doctrine of vast importance to the progress of Russian letters. In emphasizing the political implications of literature, largely at the expense of aesthetic criteria, its practitioners have at various times been known as 'civic,' 'utilitarian,' 'sociological,' or 'radical' critics.
