At present we are conscious of ourselves as a set of adjuncts like body, mind, intellect with object knowing consciousness, in which our attention seemingly moves away from the self towards the object with seeming separation from the knowing subject and known object. All objects come into existence only when our attention is directed towards them. The act of directing our attention towards something which appears as other than ourselves is what we call thinking. In self-enquiry we withdraw our attention from thoughts and objects consciousness moves Self-wards because self is the base for appearance and disappearance of "I" thought i.e. mind. This natural positing of our attention in the self conscious being is self-enquiry. Self-Enquiry is holding on to awareness of being that "we already are". When the mind strays you bring it back- that's all. Self-Enquiry is not through thought but paying attention to the source of it. There is no ego apart from the idea of "I" thought. The "I" thought arises from the self and depends upon the self for its existence. It is never apart from the self and in fact the self but forgetful of its true nature. It believes in the lie of its independent existence apart from the self. As enquiry proceeds the lie becomes tenuous until it loses its power to hold us. Each time when you observe this "I" thought you break your identification with the "I", you disconnect from this "I" as being part of you. As you peel from this false "I", you will find yourself spontaneously abiding in a tranquil centre, just abide in that "I am". At this point there is no feeling of "I" thought as an object presently sensed. Just be there. After sometime mind will take over, that is natural, do not be frustrated. With practice we will find much easier to abide in this state of "I am" and for longer periods. There is no place for effort, expectation, hurry in this. The idea that one is an individual person is generated and sustained by "I" thought and its habit of constantly attaching itself to all thoughts and perceptions that go on in the mind and the body. Self-Enquiry is to reverse this process by depriving the "I" thought of all the thoughts and perceptions that it normally identifies with. If one can break the connection between "I" thought and the thoughts it identifies with, then the "I" thought itself will subside and finally disappear. This can be done by holding on to "I" thought, excluding all other thoughts. If one can keep the attention on the inner feeling of "I", the power of self pulls the "I" thought back into it and eventually destroys it so completely that it never rises again. This is the moment of self realization. When this happens, the concept of individual self is destroyed, only self remains. All this happens when we perform self-enquiry with the same intensity as that of a drowning man struggles for air. The devotees of Ramana Maharshi used to go begging for food in the town of Tiruvannamalai and they asked Bhagawan to write poems for singing while begging so that people will recognise them as Ramana Maharshi devotees. Conceding to their request Bhagawan started writing verses, considering himself as bride to the bridegroom Arunachala Siva in which out of love he accuses Arunachala Siva for not fulfilling his spiritual expectations. This type of accusing out of love is called Ninda Stuti (Praising through accusing) which has got its own poetic value. Bhagawan used to do Giri Pradakshina slowly and some verses were spontaneously felt by him and he noted them on the paper. On the whole there are 108 verses, the number is auspicious in Hinduism. Akshara is a sanskrit word which means indestructible letter, Mana in Tamil means marriage, Malai means garland. So the bride Ramana Maharshi prepared the indestructible garland of letters for the bridegroom Arunachala Siva to place that garland around his neck during marriage and in turn expects a garland of grace from Arunachala Siva. In observation of conflict in timeless dimension about the nature of conflict which is a product of time, there is the solution to conflict. Ending of conflict is the ending of sorrow. So he tries to hind security in identity with family, property, group, caste, nation, belief systems and religion. But the very identity with all these lead duality, contradiction, conflict, war. In the intensity of watchfulness we come to know the falsity of contents of mind and so in the intensity of watchfulness the contents evaporate. Then the mind is empty. This watchfulness is not against the mind but with watchfulness ego activity comes to a stand still and so we go beyond the ego and we penetrate the unknowable. We cannot penetrate the unknowable with the known. All methods belong to known and you cannot jump into unknown by clinging to known. A mind that is empty of known has the capacity to jump into the unknowable. Mind with contents is conditioned and so always in conflict. Unless we see the falsity of conditioning mind is in conflict and split. Split mind is a fragmentary mind and is never free of ego activity like greed, anger, sex etc. Such fragmentary mind can never comprehend the truth. Mind without any contents can comprehend the truth. When there is freedom from background of conditioning there is intensification of life. Life is a process of challenge and response and we respond adequately to challenge only when we are free of conditioning. Till then action is incomplete and there is perennial conflict. It is nothing to do with organized belief which is religion or dogma or superstation or emotion. It is direct perception of the movement of a mind to a challenge. When we are aware of the movement of the fact, the fact flowers in passive awareness of perception and reveal itself and withers. This is real religiosity. We investigate matter through thought and thought itself is a conditioned matter and we store that information as knowledge in memory cells. Next time we act from that knowledge through thought. Knowledge is never complete because something more can be added always to the existing knowledge and so there can be no complete knowledge about anything and so thought arising from limited knowledge can never be complete. So in self-inquiry we understand the role of dead past and so it is never allowed to interfere in the investigation of "active present" and so past is kept where it should be and make mind alive, still and sensitive again. Then only we are free to do self-inquiry with free mind without any belief, dogma, then we are free to flow and swim in self-inquiry. Is self-inquiry divorce from daily life, our conduct, daily activity of being greedy, envy, daily imitative, competitive, conforming spirit, daily sensual, intellectual appetites, so self-inquiry divorce from all that or self-inquiry flows from all that, covers all that, includes all that. Otherwise self-inquiry has no meaning. Trying to do self-inquiry for few minutes and doing mischievous things rest of the day is just a self deception. It is not a self imposed thing to arrive at a point. Some people pray out of confusion but it is a finite expression to attain something. Many feel that there is a path to truth and we can arrive easily by doing self-inquiry. But self-inquiry demands total transformation of thinking process through witnessing by a still mind. Many believe truth is a static and fixed state. We can participate in truth but there is nothing like arriving. Through self-inquiry we will come to know how to participate in truth, so question of arriving does not exist. Does self-inquiry covers whole field of life or totally apart from life? or does it embrace whole field of life. If it does not embrace all that self-inquiry has no meaning. It becomes another escape. The perfume of self-inquiry should pervade my activity, and then only our life becomes orderly. Bhagawan used to do Giri Pradakshina slowly and some verses spontaneously felt by him and he noted them on the paper. On the whole there are 108 verses; the number is auspicious in Hinduism. Akshara is a Sanskrit word which means indestructible letter, Mana in Tamil means marriage, Malai means garland. So the bride Ramana Maharshi prepared the indestructible garland of letters for the bride groom Arunachala Siva to place that garland around his neck during marriage and in turn expects garland of grace from Arunachala Siva. So Akshara Mana Malai means marital garland of letters put together by Ramana Maharshi. I will try to give the meaning of each of 108 verses according to my understanding and any improvements over it or suggestions are welcome. 108 numbers has significance. 9 Planets with their 12 rasis is equal to 108. So "doing" is not involved in inner exploration. But we can create a situation in which it happens. Ordinarily we are living in a closed existence of conditioning in which there is convenience but we lead almost a dead life. Witnessing consciousness explores the inner reality. A human who seeks comfort and security cannot explore the inner reality. We have to create a receptive situation in which witnessing consciousness can happen. For this you have to transcend the accumulated knowledge which is just information and it is a dead entity. Thought arises from this dead entity and so it is not the right instrument for exploring living inner reality. Knowing is spontaneous.
