This book explores the economic realities of farming under irrigation in the early 20th century, with the objective of helping farmers determine what was then considered to be a fair price for water. Extensive data was collected from Idaho's Twin Falls Canal Company to assess costs and returns from farming under irrigation. The authors examine the role of the company, which was formed under the Carey Act. Water was supplied continuously to approximately 800 miles of canals operated by the company, which then levied assessments against its stock for irrigation and other purposes. The study found that, on average, the investment in building and equipment increased as the net income of the farm increased, while the percentage of total expenses allocated to debt payments decreased. The authors also found that the receipt from special crops, such as beans, clover, and alfalfa seed, accounted for a large portion of farmer income. This book offers valuable insights into the cost of water for irrigation and the financial aspects of farming under irrigation in the early 1900s, providing a foundation for understanding the historical development of agricultural practices in the American West.
