The Gingin Chalk is a marine geological formation found only in Western Australia, but which contains an assemblage of microfossils closely resembling those of the European and…North American Upper Cretaceous. The author undertakes a detailed study of the foraminifera and ostracoda contained within, and identifies 134 species, 59 of which have never previously been recorded in the Cretaceous. By comparing the findings with those from other Australian and international sites, the author provides an assessment of the relative age of the Gingin Chalk, and places its deposition in the early to middle stages of the Upper Cretaceous period. The author argues that many of the foraminiferida are typical of a moderately deep-sea environment with warm temperate waters.
