Condition: Poor. Mm. 280x190. 54 pagine numerate. Book.

Venetia, Pietro Dusinelli, 1586. Folio. Nice later (around 1950) half polished calf, raised bands, 4 compartments gilt. Titlepage with a beautifull renaissance caryatid border in woodcut and with the coat of arms of the Duke of Aragon. Title with 2 small stamps. (4),92 leaves + 2 unnumbered leaves (at sign. T) with illustrations…. Having 6 full-page and 29 smaller woodcut-iullustr. and 2 unnumb. plates. Clean and fine, with the illustrations in strong impressions. The opening initial in the preface has been cut out, with a bit of loss of a few letters on verso. The very rare first edition, the only edition in the original form, of Collado's famous work, being "the first really detailed, well-illustrated technical manual on both the theory and practice of artillery" (A.R. Hall in Ballistics in the 17th century)."The greatest interest of this work as far as pyrotechnics are concerned is contained in Chapter 11 which is entitled, "Of.fires which can be adopted for use in times of festivity. The text of the 1586 edition describes these items (a line rocket, a vertical and horizontal wheel, and a device called Spanish 'Las Granadas'), but they are not illustrated. This book contains some of the earliest and fullest descriptions of recreative fireworks." (Chris Philip, C 070.4)."Very rare, and one of the earliest works, if not the earliest, dealing exclusively with artillery. The numerous types of cannon figured are of great interest, while the work itself represents a fine specimen of typography." (Sotheran, Bibliotheca Chemico-Mathematica, vol. I, no 6987.Cockle (No 664) calls it "Very rare" the only ed. of the original form of Collado's famous work, Ayala, nor having seen it, gives the trans. of the Spanish "Platica" as a reprint of it."(Cockle). The "Platica" is a Spanish translation from 1592.

Paris, Pierre Gvillemot, 1632. 8vo. Cont. full limp vellum, remains of ties. Titlelabel in red leather on back, this with a small nick. Top of spine strenghtened with a strip of vellum. Engraved title with Neptun & Mars. (6),277,(10) pp., 28 half-page textengravings and 15 large wood-cut illustrations. A few scattered brownspots…. A good copy. Second enlaged edition of this scarce treatise of fireworks for war and recreation. The work is divided in five sections: the first 56 pp. to war, pp. 57-146 to 'recreation' and pp. 147-277 to sundials, fortification, geometry and arithmetics. Of the English edition of 1629, Cockle says "This work, though in advance of anything so far written on the subject in English, does not attain to the standard of Thibourel and Appier. Yet it is with foreign treatises it must be weighed, for Malthus received his training in pyrotechnics abroad. It was Malthus who about the year 1634 introduced the mortar into the French service." - Klaus Jordan: 2328 (ed. 1629) - Chris Philip: M 040.3 - Cockle Nos 118 a. 939.

Haye, Chez J. Neaulme, 1741. Small 8vo. Cont. full mottled calf w. five raised bands on back, back richly gilt. Small holes and lack of leather to lower capital and back-hinge, due to insect-bites. Bdg. somewhat worn. Internally a bit of brownspotting and occationally a little soiling, but overall fine. Engr. frontispiece (= eng…r. t-p. dated 1707), 8 full-page engr. plates and 3 about half-page engr. vignettes. (6), XVIII, 394, (6) pp. This is the Dutch reprint (in French) (also called the "pirated edition") of the first edition from 1706/07, with the engraved title-page from this. The second edition appeared in 1747. "In 1741 Neaulme issued a pirated edition which again, apart from variations on the title-page, is identical to the 1706 edition. Encouraged by this pirated edition Frezier wrote a second edition which appeared in 1747 in three differing versions." (C. Philip, p. 59). Very important reference-work on firewirks. "Frezier was probably one of the most important pyrotechnics in the mid 18th century." (C. Philip, p. 58). He borrows heavily from other authors, but his works are interesting, also as they scrupulously cite the sources. The plates show different kinds of fireworks, with many illustrations on each and the vignettes show displays of fireworks, as this work also deals much with the conduct and displaying of these.
