An attempt was made to adopt Markov model for understanding LULC dynamics. The simulated LULC area of year 2011 was compared with the actual area interpreted from 2011 satellite image (CARTOSAT - 1) and the future LULC in the year 2015 was derived using a Markov model. The results showed that Markov model and Geospatial technology together are able to effectively capture the spatio-temporal trend in the landscape pattern associated with urbanization in this region.

A necessidade de compreender a mudança LULC é essencial para o desenvolvimento regional e a gestão do uso da terra rumo ao desen…volvimento sustentável. Para compreender a mudança LULC, as diferentes categorias LULC e a sua variabilidade espacial e temporal na cidade de Tiruchirappalli no Estado de Tamil Nadu foram estudadas durante um período de seis anos (2007-2012), através da análise de imagens de Satélite de Detecção Remota Indiana (IRS). Foi feita uma tentativa de adoptar o modelo Markov para a compreensão da dinâmica LULC. A área LULC simulada do ano 2011 foi comparada com a área real interpretada da imagem de satélite de 2011 (CARTOSAT - 1) e a futura LULC no ano 2015 foi derivada utilizando um modelo Markov. Os resultados mostraram que o modelo Markov e a tecnologia Geospacial juntos são capazes de capturar eficazmente a tendência espaço-temporal no padrão paisagístico associado à urbanização nesta região.
