Covers are very clean and intact except for light age toning, slight wear to extremities, and a few wrinkles. A Very Good copy. This is a pamphlet that was published on the occasion of a memorial service for members of Stockton Lodge No. 218 who have passed. The text on verso of title page features an "In Memoriam" list in two columns with over seventy names in total. The following page lists the names of officers of the lodge with their accompanying titles, trustees, and "past exalted rulers." The program of the memorial service then follows which briefly lists the "order of exercises," among which are orchestral songs, opening and closing ceremonies of "Lodge of Sorrow," a prayer, vocal solos, a eulogy, an address by Brother F. J. Murasky of San Francisco Lodge No. 3, doxology, and benediction. There are a couple of brief extracts from poems or songs as well. The last page lists names of the Memorial Committee. Stockton Lodge No. 218 is one of the lodges that is part of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE, also known as Elks Lodge or simply, The Elks), an American fraternal organization that was founded in 1868 in New York City. BPOE was originally a social club for minstrel performers but transitioned to a fraternal organization following the death of one of the club's members resulting from a physical ailment and lack of funds for his treatment. By 1890, BPOE had 173 lodges in the United States. BPOE has several requirements for membership including, among others, being a certain age and willingness to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, salute the American flag, and adhering to U.S. laws and the Constitution. BPOE originally had more rites and traditions based on those of the Freemasons but discarded many of them in order to establish its own identity. Currently, BPOE maintains its social aspect but also has charitable programs such as those supporting youth and veterans. BPOE and Stockton Lodge No. 218 are still active to this day. Stockton Lodge No. 218 was originally located at Weber and Sutter Streets but moved to its current location on Thornton Road in 1974. As of 2020, BPOE claims it has over 750,000 members. BPOE has had controversy throughout its history due to its exclusion of African Americans, Italian and Jewish people, and women, among others, from membership, but by 1973, BPOE removed the discriminatory clause in its national constitution excluding non-white men from being members, and women were later allowed to join following a vote in July 1995.
