Map
No Binding. Condition: Good. Two colour maps of Doha, each @70x99cm, printed by Doha Modern Printing Press. Both good, folded with several archival tape repairs to the versos, small marks, and creasing to the edge of (1). These are early products of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs' ambitious Qatar Area Referencing System (QARS), which assigned each Area, street, and building with a number and signage. This had been recommended by Shankland Cox during 1979-81 to assist planning and resolve confusion. Phase 1 covered Doha in 67 Areas. Phase 2 covered the rest of the country. In 1992 the Ministry linked QARS to GIS through its new Centre for Geographic Information Systems (CGIS). MAP 1: Doha Preliminary Street Map Popular Version (Qatar Area Referencing System Public Information Programme, Phase 1 - Doha). Undated, c1987. Captioned in English, with a note stating the final version will be released on completion of QARS. The main map (6cm to 1km) shows major buildings and enterprises pictorially, differentiating road types, with Zone Index. An inset covers downtown Areas 1-7 enclosed by major roads. // MAP 2: Doha City - Map of Roads and Streets (Media Programme Street Naming and Real Estate Numbering Project in Qatar - Qatar Area Referencing System (QARS)). Dated 1991. Captioned in Arabic. The main map, 1/18K, covers a slightly wider area in more detail, including green spaces, health centres, petrol stations etc. The inset is more detailed. There is an extensive Index with grid references and b/w Area Map Key to the verso. Both appear to be rare with Worldcat locating Map 1 at the Library of Congress only (OCLC 35277950), and an English language edition of Map 2 at LoC and University of South Carolina (OCLC 25707091). It also records a related QARS Executive Summary (1983), and Guide book (c1990).
