Around 1819,James Taylor Whitesettled near the Brazos River in what later became southeast Texas, then part of Mexican Texas. He brought cattle from Louisiana and began raising longhorn cattle on open range land. His operation became known as one of the earliest organized cattle ranches in Texas and helped lay the foundation for the Texas cattle industry.
