ISBN 10: 0000328898 ISBN 13: 9780000328892
Magazine / Periodical First Edition
Printed wrappers, small 8vo, 64 pp, ills. The issue is devoted to: "Edward Ardizzone: a preliminary hand-list of his illustrated books, 1929-1970", by Brian Alderson. From the introduction: ".the compiler decided that - despite the quantity of material involved - it would be a sensible plan to indicate not just the publication details of the books but also the number and kind of illustrations in them. The lack of a completely acceptable terminology and the difficulty of determining precise details about the methods by which illustrations have been prepared have hampered progress but it is nonetheless hoped that the list will prove useful to those who wish to know more of the work of a great artist. In a negative way, it may also stand as a warning to like-minded proto-bibliographers - a guide to how this complex task may be improved upon." Slightly faded around spine, otherwise Good.

Cloth, 8vo, 26 cm, 109 pp, numerous ills. From the introduction: "There are few firms of craft bookbinders that can claim an existence of longer than one hundred years. One which can is Zaehnsdorf Limited, founded in 1842 by Joseph Zaehnsdorf. It remained under the direct control of three successive generations of the Zaehnsdorf family for a period exceeding its century; at first under the style of Joseph Zaehnsdorf, and then, as Zaehnsdorf Limited, following its registration as a private limited company in 1913. The company passed from the control of the family in 1947, and, after several changes of name and ownership, it began trading again as Zaehnsdorf Limited, under its present owners, in May 1957. The era when under control of the family presents a convenient and interesting period for study, and together with the three principals concerned, will be considered in the present essay. On the basis of the available records, and articles in contemporary trade periodicals, a few perspectives are here presented on the story of one of the better known firms of English bookbinders." Cloth, folio, 31 cm, 337 pp, ills. From the blurb: "John Everett Millais (1829-1896) is probably best known today as a leading English painter of the nineteenth century and a founder member in 1848 of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In the sphere of black-and-white book and periodical illustration he was an outstanding master. His range was enormous and he could illustrate in a number of different styles to suit the texts he was given. He was equally at home with poetry by Tennyson, novels by Anthony Trollope and Harriet Martineau, and delightful books for children. Because so many of his designs are scattered through various publications, some of which are rare and obscure, this significant area of his uvre has remained under-appreciated. This book is the first to present faithful reproductions of all of Millais's published illustrations. An important feature is the discussion of every image together with its literary context, to ensure a full understanding of the meaning Millais wished to convey and illuminate. The original designs are chiefly wood-engravings, though some were engraved on steel; the small number of etchings that he undertook are also included. " Near Fine in Near Fine dustwrapper.
