Niccolò Paganini (Genoa, 1782 Nice, 1840) was one of the great protagonists of 19th-century European music, a symbol of romantic instrumental virtuosity, a daring innovator of violin technique, a talented guitarist, and a prolific composer. Quello stesso giorno il vescovo di Nizza, monsignor Domenico Galvano, ne vietò la sepoltura in terra consacrata. Questo evento, inatteso e sconcertante, suscitò una forte reazione da parte degli amici genovesi del musicista, che si adoperarono in ogni modo perché a Paganini fosse data onorata sepoltura. Tra appelli e ricorsi ai tribunali ecclesiastici di Nizza e di Genova, e dopo tre distinti processi, le istanze degli amici di Paganini furono finalmente accolte nel 1844. I vescovi di Nizza e di Genova, tuttavia, si opposero con tutte le loro forze a quell'ultima sentenza, e ci vollero ancora diversi anni prima che la salma di Paganini potesse essere sepolta, nel 1853, in terra consacrata. Oggi i resti del grande violinista riposano finalmente nel cimitero della Villetta di Parma. Il volume segue passo dopo passo tutte le tappe della dolorosa vicenda post mortem del compositore, e propone una serie di documenti la maggioranza dei quali pubblicati qui per la prima volta che offrono al lettore la possibilità di comprendere fino in fondo il complicato intreccio di interessi non solo religiosi, ma anche politici, che si celavano dietro quella mancata sepoltura.
