"This book was first published in the United States and the United Kingdom in 1949 and became a standard work on the techniques of gravure, which encompasses all forms of art that involve incising a groove on some resistant material. After being out of print for some years, though still much in demand, it has now been revised and partially rewritten, with the author contradicting some of his original conclusions. S. W. Hayter founded, and still runs, the famous Atelier 17 in Paris.
