No dust jacket as issued. . . . . . . . Chief Justices of the United States, Taft excepted, have traditionally been identified more with decisions of the Court than their off-bench utterances. The Burger Court or The Warren Court may be a useful journalistic shorthand, but represents only one facet of the work of the Chief Justice in the last quarter of the 20th century. A Chief Justice is only one voice and one vote, and his standing as primus inter pares among the nine carries only such weight as comes from support of his positions. This is as true of the Great Chief Justice, John Marshall, as it is today. But two factors made Marshall's situation unique: much of the great work of his early years was in a court made up of Federalists - dedicated to a strong national government--and they were writing on a clean slate. Apart from that, the administration of a judicial system consisting in Marshall's day of thirteen trial judges and a Supreme Court of six hardly merits administration. There are unusual and compelling reasons for bringing together the body of thought represented in this selection of public statements by the Fifteenth Chief Justice outside the courtroom.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Diagrams by Doug Anderson (illustrator). 3rd Edition. Ann Hutchinson's foundational manual on Labanotation, also known as Kinetography Laban, remains the most authoritative modern text on analyzing, describing, and recording human movement. This expanded and revised third edition, nearly twice the length of the original, integrates the results of international conferences, refinements of symbolic vocabulary, and clarifications arising from decades of pedagogical use. With extensive diagrams by Doug Anderson, detailed symbol glossaries, and discussions covering footwork, gestures, rotation, torso movement, aerial steps, floor patterns, and more, the work serves both dancers and researchers seeking a rigorous notation system comparable to musical score-reading for movement. Binding solid and square; text clean. Light rubbing and shelfwear to the edges and hinges, faint creasing to spine, and minor age toning to the cover and page edges. Interior pages remain bright, unmarked, and fully legible. Revised Third Edition, published 1977. Copyright 1954, 1970 by The Dance Notation Bureau; 'Alphabet of Basic Symbols' copyright 1954 by Rudolf Laban. Publisher: Theatre Arts Books, 333 Sixth Avenue, New York. No number line typical of TAB paperbacks; this is the true revised third edition as stated. Includes glossaries, appendices, index, and preface by George Balanchine. Ann Hutchinson Guest (1918-2022) was one of the world's leading authorities on dance notation and movement analysis. As a longtime figure within the Dance Notation Bureau, she advanced the study and teaching of Labanotation globally, publishing widely and shaping generations of choreographers, dancers, and scholars.
