Son suicide sera son échec. Ce serait oublier et l'homme et l'époque, ce serait ignorer une oeuvre exemplaire. S'en suit un periple poetique, essaime, entre les etapes du voyage, de nostalgie pour la patrie eternelle, de panegyriques en l'honneur de parents ou d'amis, d'invectives contre ceux qui menacent l'eternite de l'empire et de digressions didactiques. Le poeme n'en garde pas moins une grande elegance dans le style, assuree par la linearite du chemin, cet iter qui conduit le haut-fonctionnaire gaulois sur les pas de l'elegie ovidienne. Ainsi, le recit de navigation de Namatianus, narre a la premiere personne, emprunte au journal de voyage la spontaneite et la mouvance de l'ecriture, alors meme qu'il transforme une realite vecue en oeuvre d'art (Introduction, XXII), notamment par sa maitrise du distique elegiaque. L'eloignement tisse des echos emouvants entre les paysages imaginaires et reels qu'il traverse: Rome apparait radieuse et intemporelle face aux cites abandonnees de son parcours. Ses haltes devoilent des rivages tantot accueillants par leurs hautes cimes et leurs thermes purs, tantot couverts de tenebres et de vices. C'est tout un portrait entrainant de la cote qui se dessine dans les descriptions de Namatianus. Entre la Spezia et le port Auguste, il invite son lecteur a etre juge et compagnon de route, citoyen et poete.
