Probable first edition (no direct statement but without any indication of later printings upon copyright page as was LSU Press' contemporary practice). xxiv, 565 pages. Hardcover: H 26cm x L 19.5cm. Dust jacket rubbed with some foxing and soiling; several short tears and some bumping at edges; small ding to lower spine center. Dark mustard cloth; bright gilt and black stamping to spine. Moderate foxing to text block's top edge with light foxing to fore-edge and minimal foxing to bottom edge. Some foxing to book's color plates and their adjacent pages but otherwise interior leaves are clean. Binding retains some crispness. With illustrated endpapers, fourteen color plates, 247 figures, 70 distributional maps, ten tables, chapter headpiece illustrations, Foreword by Ted O'Neil, Preface, Acknowledgements, Introduction, Literature Cited, and Index. Louisiana-born ornithologist George Hines Lowery Jr. (1913-1978) earned his Ph.D. at University of Kansas and served as Boyd Professor of Zoology at Louisiana State University.
