Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Second Printing. s3 8¼"x10¼"; Volume 1 (pages 1 to 378) Ancient and Medieval Weapons and Warfare (to 1500); Volume 2 (pages 379 to 748) Modern Weapons and Warfare (from 1500); ex-library book (Naperville, Illinois Public Library) with the usual library markings; The binding and pages a…re clean, tight and square. There is no underlining, highlighting or margin notes. This is a 2 Volume set and may require additional postage. If interested, please contact me first for actual postage costs. (From Booklist) Weapons and Warfare strives to achieve an overview of all weapons and their use in warfare from ancient to modern times. Volume 1 covers the period of ancient times to 1500, and volume 2 continues coverage of weapons and strategies up through modern times. Each of the volumes is arranged with the same scheme. Discussions of major weapon groups are followed by sections that survey historical periods and are further divided by geographic region. The total number of topics covered in the two volumes exceeds 100, ranging from 2,000 to 7,000 words. All weapons-oriented essays are organized into sections that discuss the development and use of each type of weapon. The sections treating regions of the world survey such topics as military organization, strategy, and tactics. The concluding section, "Warfare in the Global Age," includes an essay on terrorism and anti-terrorism since 1990, with a very good summary of information current up to the bombing of the USS Cole in October 2000. In addition to the main essays on the weaponry and the context of warfare, volume 1 includes a section entitled "Research Tools" offering brief biographies of significant military theorists, an essay on "Geography and Military Development," a general time line, and an extensive glossary. A bibliography of books and articles is appended to each topical essay. Illustrations appear throughout, and these, as well as maps and time lines, are listed at the beginning of each volume, which makes locating these features very easy. A categorized list of essays is repeated in both volumes. Appendixes, located in volume 2, include an annotated bibliography as well as a listing of Web sites. A complete index to the two volumes is also found in volume 2. Weapons and Warfare is aimed at college and high-school students, but the set is very accessible for the general audience.
