Originally published in the UK by Heinemann in hard covers in 1960. Spine has light reading creasing and edge rubbing. Browning to the page edges. Name of the original owner in ink on the inside of the front cover - this was Howard Erskine-Hill, a literary scholar and former Fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge. The pages are browned with a tiny tear to the edge of the first page but they are otherwise unmarked. Cover illustration by Osbert Lancaster. The true first publication of these two early Anthony Powell novels in the United States. After the first appearance of A Question of Upbringing the Periscope Bookshop and the Holliday Bookshop, New York City, cooperated in bringing out these two early works by Powell in an edition of perhaps 4,000 volumes. Inscribed by Anthony Powell on the front free endpaper for Alison Lurie: "Alison from Tony with love July 1971." Powell also crossed out his printed name on the title page and signed his name in full.
