Die Abwendung vom rein handwerklichen Aspekt hin zu einer wachsenden Akademisierung des Notariats erzählt der Band am Beispiel Eduard Schramm (1809-1875). Mit Gabriel Riesser (1806-1863) begegnet uns der erste jüdische Notar im vormärzlichen Hamburg, dessen hartnäckig umkämpfte Zulassung sich als Meilenstein seines Erfolges begreifen lässt.
