No Binding. Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Text is in Spanish. Original black-and-white photo postcard. No date, circa 1920s. 5 1/2" x 3 1/2." Title printed at the bottom of the image. Imprint of "Posta Mex" also at the bottom of the image and imprint of "Agfa" printed on back. Brief handwriting in blue ink on back reads, in part, "For my Mama." Postcard is very clean and intact overall except for slight corner and edge wear and a few small spots on the image in the top corners and on the left side. A Very Good copy. This postcard shows Catedral Metropolitana de la Ciudad de Mexico ("Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral") in Mexico City's Zocalo (central plaza). The cathedral was constructed between 1573 and 1813 and features Baroque, Gothic, Neoclassical, and Neo-Renaissance architecture. It was built directly over Templo Mayor, the main temple of the Mexica (Aztecs) in Tenochtitlan. The Zocalo's former gardens are also depicted on the postcard. The gardens were planted circa 1914 and replaced ash trees that were planted in the nineteenth century with palm trees. Unfortunately, the plaza had severely deteriorated by the 1970s and the gardens are no longer there. Beginning in the late 1990s, plans were implemented to repair and renovate the Zocalo. "D.F." on the postcard refers to "Distrito Federal," Mexico City's former designation as a Federal District. In 2016, its name officially changed to Ciudad de Mexico (CDMX). Agfa was the abbreviated name of Aktien-Gesellschaft fur Anilin-Fabrikation, a German photochemical company that was founded in 1867 in Berlin. Agfa merged with the American company, Ansco, to become Agfa-Ansco in 1928. Both companies produced photographic postcard stock to be used for photo post cards. Ansco manufactured photography paper and equipment until the 1980s.
