L'ouvrage est dédié à Christophe Radziwill (1547-1603), membre de la puissante famille lituano-polonaise, prince du Saint Empire Romain, duc de Birze et de Dubincki et ardent calviniste. Freher présente dix sources de l'histoire de la Bohême, à commencer par la plus ancienne, la chronique de Cosme de Prague (environ 1045-1125) . La "Chronica Bohemorum" suit la compilation de Freher, sous la marque au Pégase de Claude de Marne, successeur d'André Wechel, l'imprimeur-libraire de Francfort, qui édite également en 1608 la "Bohaemia pia", recueil de vies de saints de Bohême par l'homme d'église pragois Georgius Bartholdus Pontanus, de Breitenberg. Le quatrième texte est l'édition en 1617 de la "Majestas Carolina", recueil juridique de CXXVII statuts, par lequel Charles IV (1346-1378) avait tenté en vain de renforcer le pouvoir royal central face à la noblesse de Bohême. Les deux derniers textes, datés de 1575, sont édités à Bâle par l'imprimeur protestant Pietro Perna. Il s'agit de "l'Historia Boiemica" de l'évêque d'Olomouc (Olmütz), Jan Dubravius (1486-1553) en 23 livres dont la première édition date de 1551 et le "De Bohemorum.origine et gestis" d'Aeneas Sylvius Piccolomini, proche de l'Empereur Frédéric III Habsbourg et futur pape Pie II (1458-1464).
