4to. 2 pp. Highly interesting letter to his friend, the critic René Dumesnil, concerning the wedding of Tansman's daughter Marianne to a Sienese nobleman and a campaign for the preservation of the Théâtre Royale de La Monnaie in Brussels as an independent institution. Tansman informs Dumesnil that he has received an appeal from the directorate and the personnel together with news clippings concerning government plans for La Monnaie. According to this plan, La Monnaie would cease to exist as an autonomous opera house and serve only as a venue for productions of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège and the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp. Dumesnil did indeed write an article that ran on 10 October 1958, mostly following Tansman's argument and some of his examples, including Tansman's own opera "Le Serment" that had premiered on 11 March 1955. The campaign for La Monnaie was ultimately successful. - Well preserved.

8vo. 2 pp. on bifolium. With autograph address. To a Madame de Lira, explaining why he did not come to her house and advising her that she must ask him to come a few days in advance, as he is very busy teaching and playing in salons: "Je viens d'apprendre que Vous êtes venus aujourd'hui chez nous pour savoir la cause de ma non-apparition chez Vous. - With collector's note in pencil. - A note regarding the former collector and donor on the reverse: "donné par M. Zimmermann". - With a later collector's number "64" in pencil. Traces of former mounting on reverse. A few small marginal flaws.

8vo. 2 pp. on bifolium. With autogr. address. To Charles de Beauregard, editor of "La Gazette de France", apologizing for a misunderstanding which occurred due to his father's poor command of French. Beauregard's niece, Madame Jourdan, thought that de Kontski would like to play a concert with her, but he is too busy this year: "[.] - The Polish-born pianist and composer lived in Paris from 1835 to 1851, and from 1851 to 1853 served as Prussian court pianist in Berlin. After stages in St. Petersburg (1854-67) and London (1867-83) he settled in the United States, teaching in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Condition: Fine. The gelatin silver photograph (258 × 202 mm, captioned in print in the bottom margin 'Witold Lutoslawski | Composer/Condutor [sic] 1987', with the ABC logo) is signed using a silver felt-tipped pen; in fine condition. The photograph is accompanied by a typed letter signed by Peter Dennison, Professor of Music at the University of Melbourne, to the Hon. Barry Jones, Parliament House, Canberra (at that time the Minister for Science). The letter, dated 24 August 1987, goes into some detail about the circumstances surrounding the signing. 'I asked him about a recording of "Chain 3" and he said that it wasn't recorded, and he knew of no plans to record it. It was however composed only last December and it will probably take some time before the record companies realise what a stunning piece it is'. Two related ephemeral items are also included in the lot. Provenance: Collection of The Hon Barry Jones AC. Signed.
