Features a total of thirteen essays by twelve different contributors (editor Ann McLaurin contributing two essays) divided among eight chapters titled as: "The Age of Jefferson and Jackson," "Manifest Destiny," "The Sectional Crisis," "The Era of Reconstruction," "The Gilded Age," "The Progressive Era," "The Interwar Years," and "The Post World War II Years." Inscribee Charles Grayson Summersell (1908-1987) taught at the University of Alabama from 1935-1978 where he chaired the History Department from 1954-1971. The university established The Charles G.
