En ik had nog maar pas geleerd op school dat we niet bevrozen mochten zeggen, maar wel bevroren. "Met een -rrrr," zei de meester. "Met een -rrrr in plaats van een -zzzz." Maar die fout deerde nu niet in het minst. Integendeel. Zo'n stralende, heldere en welluidende zin, vond ik het, die zij nu ineens had uitgesproken. Aan het woord in de nieuwe roman van Leo Pleysier is een jongetje dat gefascineerd raakt door een tante die non is en voor de missie in China werkt. In tegenstelling tot de moeder en de zuster die in Wit is altijd schoon en De kast in hun eigen gretige taalgebruik geportretteerd worden, doet de tante in De Gele Rivier is bevrozen vrijwel haar mond niet open. De jeugdige ik-figuur moet zijn nieuwsgierigheid naar dat ijle wezen in habijt bevredigen met de afstandelijke brieven die zij over haar avontuurlijke en gevaarlijke leven in China aan de achtergebleven familie in België schrijft, en met wat anderen over en tegen haar zeggen tijdens het korte verlof dat zij bij die familie doorbrengt. Hierdoor ontstaat voor de lezer een geestig en ontroerend beeld van het milieu waarin het jongetje opgroeit. Maar tevens een beeld dat als een mal past om de raadselachtige leegte die de tante voor hem is.
