The Letter was contributed by Mr. Patrick Hill, Surgeon in the Royal Navy (dated Sydney, New South Wales, 3d January 1821) and describes an October 1,1820 capture of a male platypus and the dissection of its foot to obtain the spur, as well as the capture near Campbell's River and dissection of the pregnant female platypus (pp621-624). The List of Donors to the Museum includes donations of specimens never before held in the Society's Collection. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1796 - 1810. No. 1 - 100. 10 parts in each issue with parts title pages and the title for the collected work dated 1810. With 100 engraved plates, some hand-coloured with accompanying text (of usually two pages per plate).* Contemporary plain boards with gilt title on leather spine label. Spine a little darkened, mild rubbing, two private exlibris on endpapers, else very good. * INCLUDES: 41. Ornithorhynchus paradoxus. Das Schnabelthier. [2 pp.], 1 engraved plate. * This is one three detailed descriptions of the platypus by Blumenbach published in the first half of the year 1800. It is the only one that is illustrated. * This description is often regarded as the first scientific description to introduce Ornithorhynchus as the valid name of the genus. (The species name anatinus derives from Shaw's 1799 description of the animal as Platypus anatinus - the first scientific description). However, as we can see from a paragraph at the end of this article, there were two earlier descriptions by Blumenbach published shortly before the Abbildungen. They appeared in issue 62 of the Göttingische gelehrten Anzeigen (published on 19 April 1800 and covering pp. 609 - 613) and in issue 1 of volume 2 of as Bulmenbach calls it Voigt's 'neuen Magazin', i.e. the Magazin für den neusten Zustand der Naturkunde. The 10-page description in Voigt's Magazin is the most detailed of all three. * But neither of the three articles can lay claim to being the first to publish Blumenbach's name for the platypus. As shown in the article Platypus paradoxes (See: Wanda Horky, 'Platypus Paradoxes', Gateways, no. 52, National Library of Australia, August 2001), the binomial name Ornithorhynchus paradoxus was in fact first published in 1798 in volume 3 of Bertuch's lavish children's encyclopedia Bilderbuch für Kinder, with a brief description and a hand-coloured engraved plate, all undoubtedly supplied by Blumenbach. * Other plates of Australian and South Pacific interest included in the Abbildungen are: No. 4. O-Mai, no. 8. Certhia sannio (the Olive Creeper from New Zealand); 28. Anguis platuros (A snake from New Holland), 46. Aptenodytes chrysocome (A penguin) and no. 54. Didelphis marupialis (The common possum).…

Three handwritten and charmingly illustrated workbooks supporting Mr. Pigeon's studies in furs and pelts in France in 1929. His professor was M. Hoffman and later Mme. Dupré. The title page is M. Pigeon's fantasy of a platypus, kangaroo and polar bear surrounding his title "Chambre syndicale des Fourreurs et Pelletiers francais., Jungmann & Cie." There follows 48pp of hand manuscript notes with each page delightfully outlined and illustrated with animals and their habitats. The 2nd volume continues discusses where to buy furs by country, how to cut the fur skins, dart placement, illustrated, 42pp. The 3rd covers 4th Year Cutting Course illustrated with the shield of AAiF with two black tipped minks on either side of the shields. It includes text, patterns drawn on mannequins and paper, with the animal and skin drawings interspersed throughout. 18 pp with writing, 10 blank. The penciled title on the first volume is 'Etude elaboree sur les Fourrures, leur origines, fabrication et Commerce'. The covers are illustrated - the first with a tiger under a tree; the 2nd a pencil sketch of a fox (?) and pine trees and the 3rd a woman in a fur coat trimmed in fox with a fox at her feet. Small folio, tan card covers, string tied, covers somewhat toned, internally very clean meticulous work.…
