ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1969). (1940) 1969 4th edition. 8vo. (145 x 223mm). Ppviii,229+2pp ads. Colour frontispiece, b/w photographs & line illustrations. Cream boards, spine titled in dark brown. Rather tanned and smells of tobacco but a good copy in tanned and used dust-wrapper. A good all-round introduction to angling - flyfishing, coarse, salmon, trout, grayling, perch, pike, roach, barbel, boat and pier fishing, rock and surf fishing, big game fishing and a chapter on the sea and the fly rod. Aimed at a newly mobile audience who had perhaps only fished locally but who could now visit more or less anywhere by train. *What remains of the rear of the dust-wrapper is far worse than what can be seen from the front view of the book. .

Brown cloth, spine titled in silver gilt. Slight use, ex libris, browning to end-papers and edges, small tear to one preliminary. Good-plus in frayed dust-wrapper. "This volume is the result of an honest effort to describe, with such impartiality as I am capable of, the many and various legal methods of catching trout with rod and line in common usage to-day in the British Isles." Carter Platts further states that he has avoided "hysterical partisanship" and "I crave forgiveness of the fly fisher for having devoted so much space to bait fishing, while, with equal humility, I entreat the pardon of the bait fisher for allotting so many pages to fly fishing." Platt's recommended reading on the subject of entomology is W.G. Bainbridge's The Fly-fisher's Guide to Aquatic Flies. Some of the material in the text was first published in the Field and the Salmon and Trout Magazine, and no less than H.D. Turing and G.E.M. Skues helped prepare the manuscript. Chapters include: Trout and trout fishing; Trout rode; Other tackle; Casting the fly; Striking, playing, and landing; Knots; Wet-fly fishing; Dry-fly fishing; Artificial may-fly fishing; Nymph fishing; Lake fishing; Bustard fishing; The fly rod and the minnow; Spinning for trout - baits and tackle; Spinning for trout - methods; Clear-water wormin; Thick-water worming; Stone-fly and creeper fishing; Dapping with the may-fly and 'Daddy'; Shade fishing; Other bait fishing; thames trouting; Sea trout fishing; Familiar trout flies and their dressing; What's what in trout fishing. Appendix: Evolution of the fixed-spool reel. .

Condition: new. ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 2014). (1939) 2009 new edition (2014 re-issue). 8vo (160 x 240mm). Ppxxii,210 + 1pp ad. B/w photograph plates and illustrations. Blue boards, spine titled in gilt. Very good in slightly used dust-wrapper. Originally published in 1939 when William Carter Platts was 75 years old, Grayling Fishing was written partly to redress the balance, as he saw it, that despite a great interest from anglers in this fish, no books had been written on the subject for over thirty years; and partly as a result of a lifetime's affection for 'the lady of the stream.' He covers the subject in much detail, from its history, origins and habitat to tackle and bait selection and its presence in the kitchen, and not only covers grayling in this country but a chapter is dedicated to the species in America. A fascinating and comprehensive treatise on fishing for grayling by a passionate angler and writer. This edition has a new scholarly and informative Introduction by John Austin. This printing was limited to 500 copies for the Flyfisher's Classic Library, only 200 copies of which were actually bound. The remaining 300 copies have been issued in 2014 in a new dust-wrapper. .
