Picasso en offrit un exemplaire à sa maîtresse Dora Maar, pour lesquelles il exécuta les dessins et la dédicace. *********************** '' Le 17 janvier 1943, Picasso offre à Dora Maar, son modèle favori et sa maîtresse depuis sept ans, un exemplaire du bestiaire gravé que lui a commandé Ambroise Vollard sur des textes de l'Histoire naturelle de Buffon. Il revient une semaine plus tard et couvre le livre de quarante-quatre dessins à la plume et au lavis représentant des animaux et des visages. Un tel exemplaire n'a pas d'équivalent parmi les livres de Picasso. Exceptionnel par le nombre et la qualité des dessins, par leur relation en partie énigmatique avec les planches et les textes choisis, ce cadeau splendide annonce aussi, plus intimement, la fin d'un amour, révélant sa morsure cruelle. Entré par dation dans les collections de la Réserve des livres rares en 1999, cet ouvrage n'avait jamais été intégralement reproduit. Son édition en fac-similé est assortie d'une étude illustrée pour en mesurer l'importance dans l'oeuvre et la vie du peintre.
