German-born Yehuda Leo Picard (1900-97) moved to Palestine in 1924, where he established the Department of Geology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His "Structure and Evolution of Palestine" (1943) would become a primary source on Israel's geology, and he would serve as the first president of the Israel Geological Society during 1951-53. The USGS recognised his numerous contributions to the study of Jordan during 1928-65, and cited his work on the Peninsula. The recipient is August Buxtorf (1877-1969), a petroleum geologist with experience in Egypt, Burma and India. At this time he was Professor at the University of Basel where he had organised its Geology and Paleontology Institute, and President of the Swiss Geological Commission. Rare with Worldcat and Library Hub locating 12 institutions between them. (Ref.
