Full-Leather. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. First Edition. 489pp. and 513pp. previous owners writing. Good full leather HB's. Both Volumes are rubbed on the extremeties and the boards are also mottled and marked with age but both bindings are original and in acceptable working condition, general rubbing is apparent for a 200 year old book. Pages are foxed. Marbled enpapers have earlier owners bookplates. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.

STAT NOMINUS UMBRA. ix, [3], 405 pages. Hardcover; H 22.5cm x L 14.5cm. Original brown cloth, spine cloth sunned with lettering dulled to near illegibility, some staining to boards. Old pencil signature on front pastedown; occasionally mild to moderate foxing throughout; top corner of pages 141-142 creased. Two facsimile foldouts as called for with both strongly toned; three-panel foldout between pages 64-65 with tear along fold and wear along fore-edge and top edge; two panel foldout between pages 80-81. Binding is firm. Still an attractive good+ copy.

The text of the letters in full as first published by Woodfall in the Public Advertiser under the pseudonym of "Philo Junius". Volume has been expertly re-backed with original spine laid down. A tight and very bright copy, with contemporary ownership signature to head of first title page. Edinburgh, James Ballantyne, 1807, large in-8°, frontispiece, xxxi + 380 pp, 12 fine engr. portraits, conteporary full leather binding, lower cover completely detached, gilt decorated spine and front, marbled endpapers and matching edges, fine ex-libris (William Howard of Hartley House in Devon) some slight foxing. (deserves a restoration) Junius was the pen-name of a military man, a partisan of Lord Chatham.

Uniform matching hard back binding in nineteenth century half dark green leather with wide fold-ins, the spine divided into six panels, lettered in the second and fourth, tooling to the others, dated at the foot, tea green cloth sides, all page edges gilt, pale blue and rose marble paper end sheets. 8vo. 8½'' x 5½''. Junius was the pseudonym of a writer who contributed a series of political letters critical of the government of King George III to the Public Advertiser, from 21 January 1769 to 21 January 1772 as well as several other London newspapers such as the London Evening Post. The collection of private and open letters were from an anonymous polemicist (Junius) claimed by some to be Philip Francis, as well as other letters in-reply from people to whom Junius had written between 1769 and 1772. The collection was published in two volumes in 1772 by Henry Sampson Woodfall, the owner and editor of a London newspaper, the Public Advertiser. The collection includes 69 letters, 29 to the Printer of the Public Advertiser originally intended for public readership, with the remaining 40 to individuals, then made public. It included letters written by Philo Junius, who, some say, was Junius himself. Contains Engraved title pages (xl), 325; 366 pp with 15 full-page monochrome historical figure engravings. The engravings are without tissue papers and have left off-setting to the text block opposite, sun darkening of the leather down the spines. Interesting newspaper article from the 'Leeds Mercury' of April 24th 1901 concerning 'The Household of Junius'.
