Pierre de Marca (January 24, 1594 June 29, 1662) was a French bishop and historian, born at Gan in Béarn of a family distinguished in the magistracy. Among his numerous publications the most important are: "Histoire de Béarn", folio (Paris, 1640); "De concordia sacerdotii et imperii seu de libertatibus ecclesiae gallicanae", folio (Paris, 1641) (and other editions); "Marca hispanica seu limes hispanicus", published by Baluze (D. Balusii above), folio (Paris, 1688). Some "Lettres inedites de Marca" have been published by Tartizey de Lorroque (Paris, 1881) and J. Bonnet in the "Revuede Gascogne", January-June, 1910. As his secretary Baluze and de Marca's cousin and biographer, Paul de Faget, seem to have worked to promote and publish his work after his death, this would appear to be an early anthology of some of his writings, not found recorded in this edition on WorldCat, or in any other sources that I can locate at this time, though my reach for this material is admittedly short. Edition nova non mutilata juxia primam Editionem l' arisiensem.

Contact seller4-star sellerText in double columns. Title in red and black, headpieces and small historiated initials. Contemporary limp vellum over paste-paper, with two pairs of ties, spine lettered between double horizontal-rules. An absolutely superb copy with light wear to binding, a few tiny burn-holes to text and very minor foxing, some light pencil…ing on endpapers as well as unobtrusive, old booksellers ink marks. At the request of Cardinal de Richelieu, de Marca composed the De concordia, which first appeared in 1641. De Marca (1594-1662) sought to harmonise the claims of the church and state, allowing greater independence to the secular power. The subject was large and one can find in the book, e.g., a discussion of the so-called Donation of Constantine (pp. 105-07). The book was placed on the Index prohibititorum librorum, and de Marca retracted his views. The author was Archbishop of Toulouse and, for a short time, in the year of his death, Archbishop of Paris.
