Schon früher hatte mein verehrter Lehrer und Meister mir öfter vorgeschlagen, mich unter seiner Aegide an die Neubearbeitung seines Liebling…swerkes zu begeben, und ich hatte, ohne rechte Kenntnis von der Schwierigkeit dieser Aufgabe, mich dazu bereit erklärt. Als er dann so plötzlich aus voller Arbeitskraft abgerufen wurde, kam mir diese Arbeit als eine Art Vermächtnis vor, dessen Erfüllung allerdings umso schwerer erschien, je mehr es sich als notwendig herausstellte, das Werk, das seinerzeit als ein Wahrzeichen an der Schwelle einer neuen Epoche der Chirurgie stand, von Grund aus umzuarbeiten. Von einer solchen Umarbeitung durfte mich auch die Pietät nicht abhalten, da ich mich doch mit so viel Neuem und Geänderten abzufinden hatte, daß es sich nur in meine eigene Form und Weise gießen ließ. Nur weniges konnte ich wörtlich, gekürzt oder mit Zusätzen übernehmen, wie etwa die treffliche historische Einleitung; im übrigen beziehe ich mich auf das in seinem Werke Niedergelegte, indem ich es in seinem Namen anführe. Zahlreiche Abbildungen habe ich den Originalen nachgezeichnet; für viele bin ich sowohl Herrn v. Bruns, Tübingen, wie den Herren Bardenheuer, Cramer und Gräßner, Köln, zu Dank verpflichtet; letzteren beiden Herren auch für die liebenswürdige Ermöglichung zahlreicher Nachuntersuchungen von Amputierten. Herrn C. Sick, Hamburg, möchte ich noch besonders danken für die Ueberlassung von Abbildungen und Notizen seiner noch unveröffentlichten schönen Präparate. Für den Abschnitt über die Prothesen habe ich Herrn Dr. Hermann Gocht (1869-1938), Halle a.S., gewonnen, mit dem ich ehemals bei Schede zusammen gearbeitet habe."
