First Edition
First edition, first printing (per Scribner's requisite "A" letter code on copyright page) INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. xii, 433 pages. Hardcover: H 24cm x L 16cm. Red dust jacket rubbed; nicks, tears, and some creasing/bumping; front flap is not price-clipped. Red cloth; some dulling to front board's gilt stamping. Foxing/toning to text block edges and endpapers; occasional foxing to interior leaves. Binding is firm. Author's six-line ink inscription "For Cal - | With love, and with the hope | that the title will prove prophetic, | so that sales of the book will enable | us to build very soon on Lake Ruby - | - Peter Lyon" on title page. Born as Robert Crawford Lyon, author and scriptwriter Peter Lyon (1915-1996) enjoyed modest success (winning a 1963 George Polk Memorial Award) with this biography of his maternal grandfather Samuel Sidney McClure who was the namesake muckraking editor of McClure's magazine. Book is presented in past owner's custom-sized red wood slipcase (by Book Protectors, Inc., Lake Helen, Florida) with top panel slide and maroon folder insert for book; red slipcase is a bit inelegant but certainly quite sturdy with some scuffs/abrasions; slipcase's spine decorated with seven raised bands and three gilt-lettered dark maroon leather labels (for title-author-date). Please note that, because of the slipcase, the book has an approximate shipping weight of 3.5 pounds (1.58 kg) and may require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.
