The tinplate figures are often crude, even grotesque caricatures, e.g. the American tourist with his suitcases or the ladies in their three-wheeled automobile. They possess a kind of "over-realistic naturalism" that fascinates not only children but perhaps especially grown-ups. The mechanical toy had its breakthrough in the 1870s. Although mechanical objects had been made long before then, they were mostly not toys but expensive automats combined with a musical movement. The industrial revolution in Europe also spread to the toy industry and countries like Germany, France ."
