Scene design. Original publisherÕs mauve wrappers spine and covers lettered black. From the working library of the actor Peter O'Toole (1932-2013) with his posthumous bookplate. This small typographic bookplate, designed by Michael Mitchell of Libanus Press and authorised by the executors of his estate, reads 'From the Library of Peter O'Toole'. Ownership signature of Sian Phillips (OÕTooleÕs wife) and her rough notes on covers. Underlining and notes in both pencil and pen in her hand relating to the character of Hannah Jelkes, the moral compass in the play. Sian Phillips appeared in the West End London production of the play in 1965, directed by Philip Wiseman and with designs by Peter Farmer, it ran from 24 March to 29 May at the Savoy Theatre. Set in a Mexican seacoast town the play centres on a fallen Episcopal priest in the middle of a nervous breakdown and working as a tour guide for church women. He finds himself strangely drawn to a virginal spinster, while a promiscuous widow competes for his attention. Sian Philipps (born 1933) actor famous for playing the evil, scheming, murderous Livia inÊÔI, ClaudiusÕÊ(BBC, 1976), for which she won the best actressÊBAFTAÊaward, was married to Peter OÕToole for nearly twenty years and is the mother of his two daughters. Somewhat used, otherwise near very good. Slight fading, well used, otherwise very good.

OÕToole starred as Reginald Johnston in the Bernardo Bertolucci film The Last Emperor. Born in Scotland, Reginald Johnston (1874-1938) was a sinologist who became Puyi's tutor and as such had access to the inner court of the Qing dynasty, one of only two foreigners to have had that privilege.     Original 130 page shooting script with pink re-write pages for one of Peter OÕTooleÕs greatest films which was nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Actor (Peter O'Toole), Best Director (Richard Rush), and Best Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium. It tells Òthe story of a young fugitive (Steve Railsback) who hides as a stunt double on the set of a World War I movie whose intense film director (Peter OÕToole) will do seemingly anything for the sake of his artÓ. This script belonged to long time character actor John Garwood who has written his name on the front cover and with the name of his character ÒGabeÓ. Some annotation by Garwood, and with a page of ink notes. Bradbound in printed studio wrappers.
