(Subject: Naval & Maritime: Ships, Submarines & Other Vessels - General) This is the complete story of the US Navy's submarine task force based in Brisbane, Australia, during World War II. Highly secret at the time, their activities remain little known even today, although their contributions to the war in the Pacific were significant. The book details the force's actions, from the first boat's arrival in the dark days of April 1942, to the base's closure three years later. Drawing on the personal experiences of individual sailors, it describes heroic encounters with the enemy, clandestine special missions, plus training and R & R, and records the professional cooperation and personal friendships between Australians and Americans. "Sales/posting to the USA suspended". . Card covers, 160pp, b&w photos. A little wear on edges else very good. Diamantina is Australias largest WWII survivor and the last of over 200 River class and variant frigates the Allies built during that conflict. Built in Queensland, HMAS Diamantina went to war at Bougainville in 1945, then was the venue for the Japanese surrenders at Nauru and Ocean Island. In two commissions between 1945 and 1980, Diamantina gave outstanding service to the nation - in war, in making the peace, during the Cold War, and in oceanographic research. In conjunction with bodies like CSIRO, she carried out oceanographic research in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and also trained thousands of Navy recruits. Decommissioned in 1980, HMAS Diamantina is now a major attraction at Queensland's Maritime Museum located on the Brisbane River. The 160 page book was written by Peter Nunan of the Queensland Maritime Museum, and is well illustrated with photos of the ship's two commissions.
