La morte, adunque, non è definitiva, - afferma l'Eliade, conferendo, parrebbe, alla affermazione un valore pressoché universale - perché la luna non la conosce. E naturalmente egli si richiama a quella serie di miti, che parlano di un messaggio trasmesso dalla luna agli uomini mediante un animale, con cui li assicura che, al pari di lei stessa, ritorneranno dopo la morte in vita. Se non che, per ignoranza o per malizia, l'animale prescelto riferisce esattamente il contrario, che cioè l'uomo, a differenza della luna, non tornerà più dopo morte a rivivere sopra la terra. Non sembra tuttavia che l'errore abbia portato troppo gravi conseguenze, se non impedì alle popolazioni, a cui tali miti appartengono, di appropriarsi per altre vie e per altre esperienze la fede in una prosecuzione[]".
