What Eisenhower was to World War Two this U.S. Army general better known as "Black Jack" was to World War One as commander of the American Expeditionary Forces (1917-20) -- he actually mentored all the head honchos of WW2, including Ike, Bradley, Marshall, MacArthur, Patton and others; in 1921 he was named Chief of Staff of the United States Army, where he remained until retirement in 1924. TNS, 1p (lettersheet), 7" X 9", Washington, DC, 5 January 1923. Addressed to Honorable John Barrett (1866-1938, a Western journalist turned diplomat who served as U.S. minister to Siam, Argentina, Panama and Colombia before a 14-year stint as director-general of the Pan-American Union). Very good. Minor wrinkles. On "General of the Armies" imprinted letterhead (a rank he was the first to achieve), Pershing sends "my warm personal thanks for your Christmas and New Year's Greetings. The sentiments expressed are highly appreciated and I assure you cordially reciprocated." Boldly signed in full. Accompanied by a superb 7" X 9" head-and-shoulders sepia-tone portrait (Clinedinst Studio of Washington, DC) in uniform bearing facsimile signature. Very good. Mildly age toned.
