With this volume devoted to the 19th century, Pontus Grate brings to a conclusion his survey of the NationalmuseumÆs collection of French painting: one of the leading collections outside of France. The collection currently comprises 134 items. The oldest of the the artists, Butay, Boilly, Gerard, Hersent and Ingres, were born between 1759 and 1780. The next group of artists were born between 1791 (Gericault) and 1829 (Henner) and thus as a rule were active during the romantic and/or realistic periods. The remainder belonged to the impressionist generation or to the generation after that. Youngest of them all was Pierre Bonnard who was born in 1867, the year in which Ingres died, and lived on until 1947. Consequently the museumÆs collection covers a long period in the development of French art; remarkably fruitful period marked by great stylistic variety., English, Year2006, Illust. B/W210, Illust.
