This shorter history of Bohemia was compiled from early sources which are listed in chronological order (626-645) with notes on manuscripts and their whereabouts (646-662). The preface is dated 13th October 1774, the work is dedicated to Friedrich Chrysogon Grafen of Nostitz and Rhinek a Czech patriot for whom Pelcl worked as tutor collaborating with other figures in the Czech revival such as Josef Dobrovsky and Vaclav Matej Kramerius. In 1793 he became the first professor of Czech language and literature at Charles University, Prague. This is the first edition of his first published work 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾".

In the 10th century, the first rulers of Bohemia were pagan princes who successfully resisted the efforts of Charlemagne to Christianize them. Bohemia was then ruled by a…series of able PÅemyslid dukes in the 11th and 12th centuries, who established feudal structures and developed the lands. The PÅemyslid era came to an end in 1306, when the throne passed to the Luxemburg dynasty, under whom Bohemia experienced a golden era. Charles IV, elected Holy Roman Emperor in 1346, made Prague the capital of the Holy Roman Empire and founded the Charles University. The 15th century saw religious upheaval in Bohemia with the teachings of Jan Hus. Hus was burnt at the stake in 1415 as a heretic, and his followers, the Hussites, waged war against the Catholic Church for over a decade. After the Hussite Wars, the Jagiellonian dynasty of Poland ruled Bohemia, marking a period of relative peace and prosperity. In the 16th century, the Habsburgs took control of Bohemia, and the country's destiny became intertwined with that of the wider Habsburg Empire. The book provides fascinating insights into the political, social, and cultural history of Bohemia, bringing to life the story of a nation that played a significant role in European history.
