Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Minus. No Jacket. First Edition. 192pp. 1804. First edition. 8vo. sized. Complete with half-title page. Bound in contemporary paper-covered hardboards. Quarter brown paper over marble covered boards. All contemporary with a printed paper title label (now rubbed with some loss to peripheries) to th…e spine. A copy complete with 'local' provenance. William Peebles (1753-1826) is perhaps more famous for being teased by his rather more famous contemporary, Robert Burns for his ode to liberty written to commemorate the revolution of 1688. This copy has a contemporary and charming bookplate (copper engraving) with the motto: 'optime quod opportune' and the place, Netherplace. The plate appeared to be for a William Kentigern Hamilton-Campbell of Netherplace, Mauchline (I believe that the estate house has now been demolished? Not 3 miles from here!), which of course was significant in the crafting of Robert Burn's life. Thus this book would fit very nicely into a Burns collection. A very good minus copy. Some fairly normal age toning to the pages. Pencil annotations throughout but would almost certainly erase/rub out. No inscriptions. All four board corners bumped and rubbed with some loss. Slight loss to the spine strip at the head of the spine and loss (3cm) to the spine strip at the tail of the spine. Some rubbing to the spine strip with loss elsewhere. A very good minus, essentially clean, tight copy with a lovely local provenance.
