The author undertook a kayak trip alone from Waterhen Lake, Saskatchewan to Pine River Settlement, to Stanley Mission to Cumberland House, Manitoba. The year was 1974 (?), though he doesn't say. He had studied the stories of the old fur-trade voyageurs from his native Czechoslovakia. The journey was plagued by moose, treacherous waters, rainstorms and MOSTLY loneliness and uncertainty. There was a major interruption, but you'll READ about that.
