Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. When I first started collecting books, I was very much into books about natural history and in particular, bird books. I can remember someone telling me that there were a few key books which belonged in any bird book collection. This is one of them: "Portraits and Habits of Our Birds" prepared by various authors and edited by T. Gilbert Pearson. As the title page notes, this book is "Illustrated with Fifty Colored Plates by Louis Agassiz Fuertes, R. Bruce Horsfall, Edmund J. Sawyer, and Allan Brooks. There are also "thirty-eight photographs and drawings from nature." This is a two-volume set although it would appear that somewhere along the line they are volumes brought together after the fact; they bear different dates: Volume II is dated 1921 and Volume I, 1925 and are also of slightly different colors. Condition: Happily, despite this later marriage as a set, the two books are both in very similar and very good condition. The hard covers show some wear to be sure, but nothing very substantial. The corners and spine tips are lightly bumped and there are some other small blemishes to the finishes of the boards. Inside, the books are unmarked and the pages and plates are clean and bright throughout, without toning or foxing (some very light foxing to the front endpaper of Volume I). Three of the four hinges are intact; the front hinge of Volume II is lightly cracked and the bindings of both books are tight and sound. These books are not ex-library or remainders. Various (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Collectible-Very Good. 6 volumes (complete), illustrations, many in color, green cloth with gilt titles, 11 x 8.5" Very good overall, the mammals volumes show some use, one plate in v.4 is loose, front hinge of v.6 weak. More attention is given here to habits and characteristics of the birds and animals than in previous scientific works. Pages are clean but some have slight edge wear. Covers have slight wear to extremities and bindings feel slightly shaken but are still strong and holding. Hinges and joints of the other volumes are similar to Vol. VI in that they feel somewhat loosened but they are still holding. Stain (about 1" x 2") on back of Vol. I. Vol. IV has what appears to be faint pencil or pen scribbles on front. The loose plate in Vol. IV is a black-and-white circular diagram naming the different scientific classifications of mammals and is laid in. Each volume of this set is Very Good.
