Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Minor shelf wear, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. This collection presents, for the first time, a much-needed synthesis of the major research themes and findings that characterize the Woodland Period in the southeastern United States. The Woodland Period (ca. 1200 B.C. to A.D. 1000) has been the subject of a great deal of archaeological research over the past 25 years. Researchers have learned that in this approximately 2000-year era the peoples of the Southeast experienced increasing sedentism, population growth, and organizational complexity. At the beginning of the period, people are assumed to have been living in small groups, loosely bound by collective burial rituals. But by the first millennium A.D., some parts of the region had densely packed civic ceremonial centers ruled by hereditary elites. Maize was now the primary food crop. Perhaps most importantly, the ancient animal-focused and hunting-based religion and cosmology were being replaced by solar and warfare iconography, consistent with societies dependent on agriculture, and whose elites were increasingly in competition with one another. This volume synthesizes the research on what happened during this era and how these changes came about while analyzing the period's archaeological record. In gathering the latest research available on the Woodland Period, the editors have included contributions from the full range of specialists working in the field, highlighted major themes, and directed readers to the proper primary sources. Of interest to archaeologists and anthropologists, both professional and amateur, this will be a valuable reference work essential to understanding the Woodland Period in the Southeast.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book deconstructs the ideas embedded within the concept of 'freedom,' taking influence from one of the most celebrated works of political theory: Montesquieu's The Spirit of the Laws. The author draws on historical fact, as well as the author's own experiences, to convey the spirit of democracy, liberty, and the role of government. The text asserts that political liberty is dependent upon the fair balance between the different powers within government, and the measure of protection offered to every individual citizen, regardless of their societal position. By making a thorough case for the necessity of equal representation and fair treatment under the law, the author asserts that these principles form the solid foundation for a truly free society. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book introduces SPEED2, an accessible computer program for the analysis of automatically recorded data. It walks users through the reduction of data from automatic data acquisition systems. The program is a generalized system capable of accepting data from various data acquisition systems, checking the correctness of data, transforming analog instrument readings into standard units through linear or nonlinear transformations, and presenting data in tabular, printer plot, or ink pen plot form. The user need only know programming language and executive system control language for the computer they use. The first section of this book describes and instructs the reader on how to use SPEED2. The second section contains sample runs and examples that demonstrate SPEED2's use. The book is an excellent tool for scientists wanting to analyze experimental data composed of readings from instruments.
