The title page carries the annotation "In memory of the beloved and honorary compatriot, the esteemed Ukrainian writer Mykhailo…Kotsiubynsky - so dear and close to our hearts. Na chuzhyni, April, 1946." This copy shows slight wear and contains notes made in red and black pen throughout. This book, produced in a limited quantity, was intended for distribution among Ukrainian refugees residing in the Displaced Persons (DP) camps of post-war Germany. The challenging conditions within these camps, marked by limited resources and military censorship, make this publication a significant symbol of the resilience and determination of the displaced community during a tumultuous period in history. The creation and circulation of such books under these circumstances underscore the enduring spirit of the people in these camps, seeking to preserve and share their culture and experiences amidst adversity. Mykhailo Mykhailovych Kotsiubynsky (1864-1913) was a Ukrainian author renowned for his depictions of Ukrainian life in the early 20th century. His popular novels were later adapted into Soviet films. Apollon Trembovetskyi, using the pseudonym Petro Pavlovych (1913-1968), was a journalist and civic activist. He was an eyewitness to the "Vinnytsia Massacre" during WWII and authored numerous books and articles on the subject. After relocating to the United States, he became President of the Democratic Alliance of Formerly Repressed Ukrainians from the Soviet Union and Vice-president of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America. He also contributed to the Svoboda periodical. Leonid Denysenko is a Ukrainian Australian artist known for inventing the graphic art technique "literography." Born in Warsaw in 1926 to Ukrainian émigré parents, he studied art in Poland. Post-WWII, he worked as an artist with the U.S. armed forces in Germany. Denysenko, Leonid (illustrator) (illustrator).
