Il 12 dicembre 1308 il podesta uscente di Monselice, Antonio da Lio, consegnava ufficialmente al cancelliere del comune una notevole quantita di libri, dei quali ci ha trasmesso un dettagliato elenco uno dei notai presenti. Si trattava di unita librarie diverse per consistenza e materie, che in tutto raggiungevano la ragguardevole cifra di 103. Si possono fare due considerazioni a questo proposito. Innanzitutto che solo una realta istituzionale di peso poteva disporre, in avanzata eta comunale, di una tale mole di scritture di cancelleria; e infatti Monselice, anche se non rientra tra quelle che una consolidata tradizione storiografica ha battezzato citta-stato, fu indubbiamente una quasi-citta di notevole spicco. L'altra considerazione e che di questo materiale poco o nulla e sopravvissuto. A inizio Cinquecento, nel corso della guerra di Cambrai, l'archivio monselicese ando in fiamme e la scoperta dell'inventario lascia il rammarico di non poter attingere a una fonte che avrebbe fornito preziose conoscenze su tematiche quali l'ordinamento burocratico, le tecniche amministrative, le risorse finanziarie, la prassi giudiziaria. Una fonte, insomma, che avrebbe dato l'opportunita di approssimarci meglio a quella storia sociale delle istituzioni comunitarie che oggi e nei voti di tanti medievisti. Tuttavia qualcosa rimane di quel ricco tesoro manoscritto, ed e la fonte che qui si pubblica: il codice di 174 folii conservato presso l'Archivio di Stato di Venezia con la segnatura Secreta - Pacta Monselice, 319. Un opus composito che accorpa per grandi sezioni originali e copie di atti redatti a partire dal 1157 fino al 1308, quando, come detto, si opero la formale consegna dell'archivio della comunita al cancelliere preposto.…
