Author Bio: Paul Summers Young has worked on a number of projects with Black Letter Press, including a four-volume translation of Agrippa, and a new edition of Giambattista Della Porta's Natural Magick. Synopsis: Thomas Browne Religio Medici Edited and introduced by Paul Summers Young Religio Medici is one of the most influential books to have come down to us from the seventeenth century; like Robert Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy, it is as much an inquiry into self as it is a wandering among the Liberal Arts, at whose heart is a simple truth: you can be rationally mystical, mystically rational, and a sincere friend to all. Thomas Browne's book was published, reluctantly, in 1643, at a time of vicious sectarian violence across the Three Kingdoms. He anticipates some of the sentiments expressed by the Ranters, Diggers and Quakers, but also establishes the model for a tradition of English elegaic literature, taking his theme from life and following it across antiquity, only to bring it home again. His flights always return to this ash here in a pot being you and me. Our edition, transcribed, edited and introduced by Paul Summers Young, is based upon the 1643 edition of the text, and introduces modern spelling and punctuation conventions to render the work more accessible and enjoyable for a non-specialist reader. This is the first volume in a series of Browne's work for Black Letter Press. Author Bio: Paul Summers Young has worked on a number of projects with Black Letter Press, including a four-volume translation of Agrippa, and a new edition of Giambattista Della Porta's Natural Magick. Synopsis: Then rise to your feet and turn around your circle, from east to west, until your head spins and you fall to the ground and be still; like that, you will be enraptured, and the spirit you seek will appear and tell you all you want to know. Volume Four of our Agrippa collection comprises new translations of two texts closely related to the Three Books of Occult Philosophy. The first is the 1565 Liber Quartus de Occulta Philosophia, which is a Pseudo-Agrippan gloss on some of Agrippa's themes, which was published with a version of Pietro D'Abano's Heptameron, which served as a gloss upon the gloss. This apocryphal work went on to lead an interesting and influential afterlife, accompanying the Three Books like an ugly rumour. The second is an expanded selection from De Incertitudine et Vanitate Scientarum of c.1530. The 1533 first edition of the Three Books concludes with extracts from The Uncertainty and Vanity of the Sciences touching upon the books' themes; we have expanded upon that to encompass a more complete sample of Agrippa's commentary on magic in that book. Rather than being at odds with the Three Books, The Uncertainty and Vanity of the Sciences is the context within which Agrippa published his famous magical textbook. Please email for Photographs or further information. Like New - A particularly clean and attractive copy showing little evidence of handling or use. Brown buckram binding remains bright and crisp, with the black and gilt decoration to the upper board well preserved. Corners and extremities appear sharp, with no significant rubbing or wear evident from inspection. Endpapers are clean and fresh. Internally the volume presents extremely well, with clean, bright leaves and no notable spotting, staining or annotation observed other than the translator's signature, date and inscription. Paul Summers Young has signed the title page and dated it iii.i.mmxxiv [3 January 2024]. A separate inscription reads "Non timebis a timore nocturno", followed by Young's initials/signature. An unusually attractive signed and inscribed example of the first edition. Collation: pp. 83 Please see Photos as part of condition report. References: Ludwich, A. (ed.) The present Black Letter Press translation by Paul Summers Young is based upon the modern Italian textual tradition represented by Claudio Bevegni's edition. 2023 1st Edition Signed & Inscribed by PSY THE MARTYRDOM OF SAINT CYPRIAN Signed & Inscribed by the Translator By Aelia Eudocia Augusta Translated and Introduced by Paul Summers Young An especially appealing signed and inscribed first edition of Aelia Eudocia Augusta's The Martyrdom of Saint Cyprian, published by Black Letter Press in 2023 and translated and introduced by Paul Summers Young. This copy is one of only two copies of the title signed by Paul Summers Young for Books That Expand The Mind. The signing was personally witnessed by the proprietor of BTETM. Young has signed and dated the title page in Roman numerals, "iii.i.mmxxiv" [3 January 2024], and has additionally inscribed the volume with the highly appropriate Latin phrase: "Non timebis a timore nocturno" "Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night," from Psalm 90:5 in the Vulgate tradition. The inscription is particularly resonant in the context of Saint Cyprian, whose legend centres upon magic, demonic agency, spiritual protection, conversion and the ultimate defeat of sorcery through Christian faith. Together with the dated signature, it gives this copy considerably greater individual character than a conventionally flat-signed example. A handsome modern Black Letter Press production, bound in brown buckram with striking black and gilt decoration to the upper board, coloured endpapers, sewn book block and ribbon marker. The compact format and strongly symbolic binding are particularly suited to this important survival of Late Antique religious and magical literature. By Aelia Eudocia Augusta, Trans.
