Wo man sich in den Anfängen der Völkerkunde mit künstlerischen Erzeugnissen der Eingeborenen befaßte, galt diese Aufmerksamkeit vor allem der Ornamentik, deren Entwicklung die Thesen des damals allgemein herrschenden einlinigen" Evolutionismus in besonders einprägsamer Weise zu bestätigen schien. Als nachahmenswertes Beispiel in dieser Richtung wirkten lange Zeit die Forschungen des schwedischen Ethnologen Hjalmar Stolpe. In Deutschland sind für diese Ära der völkerkundlichen Kunstforschung bezeichnend etwa die Aufsätze von Heinrich Schurtz über das Augenornament und von Karl Weule über das Eidechsenornament. WEULE hat überdies vor und noch nach dem ersten Weltkrieg unter seinen Studenten das Ornamentikstudium bevorzugt gefördert. Ein Ertrag dieser Studien sind die Arbeiten Afrikanische Ornamentik" von MARTIN HEYDRICH und Das Ornament" von E. WILSON. Von kunstwissenschaftlicher Seite wurden die Arbeiten von AUGUST SCHMARSOW besonders maßgebend. - Paul Germann (geb. 12. Februar 1884 in Sargstedt (bei Halberstadt); gest. 1966 ebenda) war ein deutscher Kunsthistoriker und Anthropologe, der zu Afrika forschte. Er zählt zu den zentralen Figuren der deutschen Kolonialforschung in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
