Add to basketOriginal Wraps. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket, as Issued. First Edition. Penguin Books D-103. First printing of the true first edition, published in 1967 as a paperback original. Cover design by Alan Spain. ***A very good copy in colour-illustrated card covers. The covers have some light wear commensurate with age and handling…, but are generally clean. The edges of the covers are slightly rubbed and creased, and there is some surface loss at the top of the spine and top corner tip of the front cover. The spine is still flat, with just a slight lean from reading. There are no reading creases to the spine. Spine tight. No tears or bumps. Page block edges clean - just lightly tanned as usual. Spine colour slightly faded. Internally also very good, with a previous owner's name in ink at the top of the half-title page. No other annotations. No creases or tears. Inner covers browned at the edges. Internal pages clean - paper stock tanned as usual. ***126 pages plus two pages of publisher's adverts at the back of the book. 180mm x 110mm. ***'Penguin Modern Poets is an attempt to introduce contemporary poetry to the general reader by publishing representative work by each of three modern poets in a single volume. In each case the selection has been made to illustrated the poet's characteristics in style and form. The nine previous volumes are available and further volumes are in preparation.' (Quote taken from the back cover). The series eventually ran to 27 volumes, published between 1962 and 1979. ***'The Liverpool Poets are a number of influential 1960s poets from Liverpool, England, influenced by 1950s Beat poetry. They were involved in the 1960s Liverpool scene that gave rise to The Beatles. Their work is characterised by its directness of expression, simplicity of language, suitability for live performance and concern for contemporary subjects and references. There is often humour, but the full range of human experience and emotion is addressed. "The kids didn't see this poetry with a capital 'p', they understood it as modern entertainment, as part of the pop-movement."' (Roger McGough) (Wiki) ***A first printing of the true first edition, in the original card covers, in very good condition. One of the most popular titles in the Penguin Modern Poets series, covering the Liverpool Poets - the Mersey Sound - and uncommon now in first printing. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Cover design by Alan Spain (illustrator).

Hardback. Condition: New. Conflicting claims about culture are a familiar refrain of political life in the contemporary world. On one side, majorities seek to fashion the state in their own image, while on the other, cultural minorities press for greater recognition and accommodation. Theories of liberal democracy are at odds ab…out the merits of these competing claims. Multicultural liberals hold that particular minority rights are a requirement of justice conceived of in a broadly liberal fashion. Critics, in turn, have questioned the motivations, coherence, and normative validity of such defenses of multiculturalism. In Equal Recognition, Alan Patten reasserts the case in favor of liberal multiculturalism by developing a new ethical defense of minority rights. Patten seeks to restate the case for liberal multiculturalism in a form that is responsive to the major concerns of critics. He describes a new, nonessentialist account of culture, and he rehabilitates and reconceptualizes the idea of liberal neutrality and uses this idea to develop a distinctive normative argument for minority rights. The book elaborates and applies its core theoretical framework by exploring several important contexts in which minority rights have been considered, including debates about language rights, secession, and immigrant integration. Demonstrating that traditional, nonmulticultural versions of liberalism are unsatisfactory, Equal Recognition will engage readers interested in connections among liberal democracy, nationalism, and current multicultural issues.
