Handsomely bound in contemporary full tan calf, the boards double-ruled in gilt and with central decorative vignette in gilt to each board; the spine with five raised bands, ruled in gilt, with decorative gilt devices to the compartments and titles in gilt. Gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers. Page edges gilt. Original printed wrappers bound in. Short introductory essay by Max Rooses, followed by 46 finely engraved plates by Crispin van de Passe after Maerten de Vos, each with a tissue-guard and preceding caption leaf in Dutch and French. Unobtrusive embossed stamp to the rear endpaper for Neatham Mill Library. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm with a few minor blemishes and a touch of rubbing to the joints. The contents with a little offsetting from the plates to the facing blank verso of the caption leaf are otherwise wonderfully clean and crisp throughout - the engravings remaining bold and sharp. A beautifully fine and crisp suite of engravings depicting the life and the Passion of Christ by the Dutch old master engraver and publisher Crispin van de Passe (c.1564-1637) after the Flemish painter Maerten de Vos (1532-1603), originally executed in 1588 for a Book of Hours to be published by van de Passe's Plantin Press, but which never came to fruition. The engraved copperplates remained unused at the Plantin Press, then subsequently the Plantin-Moretus Musuem, for more than 300 years before they were finally put to use for the first time in the present publication - as is reflected by the remarkable strength and depth of the impressions. Engraved pictorial title of Heraclitus and Democritus and 2 illustrations and 19 circular emblematic engravings partly by Crispijn van de Passe the Younger. Contemporary stamped vellum with central arabesque ornament; (some light browning, some margins sliced in final quire but present, few corners chipped). Rear pastedown with inscription from the library of Van Isaac le Long and dated 1744. Modern armorial bookplate of Bibliotheque I.G. Schorsch on the front pastedown. Dawson's Bookshop label also affixed on rear pastedown. First edition and scarce variant copy of this classic Dutch poetry and emblem work by Zierikzee native Adriaan Hoffer, which Benesch described as, ".adorned with etchings which in themselves are perfect little works of art, although only slightly connected with the text" (Benesch, Rubens to Daumier p. 39). Hoffer's work contains poems comprising the author's self-commentary, Biblical quotes, and notably mentioned the victory of the Spanish silverfleet by Pieter Heyn in 1628, all in verse. Largely written in the vernacular, Hoffer supplemented Latin notes to his poetry through ample marginal references. Hoffer was a wealthy man and book collector with many connections in the Zierikzee community. The Nederduytsche Poëmata was his most important work, which sought to restrict the interest of natural inquiry to its edifying potential. This edition is notable for its engravings by Crispijn van de Passe the Younger, a talented engraver who inherited his father's style and repertoire and who remains inextricably linked to seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking. Not much else is known about the influence of Hoffer's Nederduytsche Poëmata or "Dutch Poems," but an earlier work of the same title was written by Daniel Heinsius (1580-1655) and published in Amsterdam by Willem Jansson in 1618. Allegory of Frederick Henry as the protector of Religion and Freedom. Frederick Henry (Dutch: Frederik Hendrik; 1584-1647) was the sovereign prince of Orange and stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Guelders, Overijssel in the Dutch Republic from 1625 until his death in 1647. In the final seven years of his life, additionally he was the stadtholder of Groningen (1640-1647). Above the oval portrait are two angels playing shofars and holding a wreath with the coat of arms of the seven United Provinces. Libertas and Religio are standing at the sides, in front ot the prince personifications of Negotiatio (Negotiation), Politia (Politic), Prudentia (Prudence) and Victoria (Victory). Engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 484 x 754 mm., platemark 450 x 727 mm., engraved by Simon van de Passe (1564-1637) after Adriaen van Nieulandt (I) (1568-1658), dated 1628. In good condition, but with two horizontal folds over the width of the sheet (one folding up the caption area (probably for storage). An old restoration to a tear in the top edge (extending minimally into the image area). Some soiling in the margins.
